Answering your 2nd question about lessons 1 through 4. Give each lesson one or 2 days before moving on to the next just so you can get some flexibility and coordination in your voice. These are exercises that can be done for a long period of time and you should notice as you're doing them over a period of time that your voice is feeling better and better....

Hey Vanessa thank you so much for the insights.
Yeah to be completely candid with you I guess what I usually do when I'm working on true lessons is to I focus the camera over my keyboard as I'm usually working from that vantage point. That puts me a little closer in with the camera.
When I'm doing the wrap-ups I guess you're right! I was just trying to get more my studio in the shot and also that little sign above my head that says the "art of singing" basically because I have always thought it looked cool....
Also to get that and my mixing board in the shot I have to pull the camera back far enough to be able to get all of that stuff in...
There is also one other factor.....For a long time I was using a Sony HD camera but for about the last year or so I started using the zoom Q4.
It is not as flexible when it comes to panning in and out but it has the most fantastic microphones for audio recording...
So to get that wide shot I have to set the camera using a preset shot. It doesn't just zoom in and out like my Sony.
Anyway just sharing with you some of the reasons why and at the same time acknowledging your suggestions and I will see if I can pull the camera shots in a little closer.
I definitely get what you're coming from. In fact that's kind of the whole point of this right? I want to create a virtual feeling for everybody in their own home's that they are having the experience of being with me in my studio.
I'll definitely keep your suggestions in mind as I'm setting up my camera.
I also assume from your comment that you will be going to the totally guitars music camp this year. So yes we will in fact meet and that will be great fun.

Hey buddy I meant to get back to you on this a little sooner but the holidays are hectic...
I love your response and I hope everybody reads it?
This is exactly why I was asking the questions.... It is interesting to mention the fact that sometimes raising the pitch instead of lowering it can put you in a better place for singing a particular melody line.
Some of the reasons being
1) The tension of the voice matching up a little easier from your transition of mix voice to head voice or even chest voice to mix voice....
2) The actual tension in your voice throughout your whole range by the melody line being a halfstep or more sometimes creates better vocal resonance in the voice.
3) And it is true that sometimes just vocalizing a halfstep or even a whole step higher for a while and then going back to the original key can have positive results..
Of course the topic of vocal resonance does not just occur by raising pitch from one key to another. There are other elements of vocal resonance which also adds to the quality of your vocal tone.
There are actually 3 places where the air resonates in hollow cavities which effects vocal resonance..
1) the nasal cavity basically your nose cavity
2) the oral cavity-your mouth cavity
3) the pharyngeal cavity-the back of your throat
Those are the places where air can resonate/vibrate.
So what I'm saying here is we are always faced with the challenge of finding the proper place/key to sing the song... this place is where the air pressure underneath the vocal chords produces the best and easiest production of sound.
Hence deciding if we should raise lower or keep the song at the same key is of utmost importance.
By doing that we maintain the best quality of tone and ease of vocal production, also by understanding how our resonators are involved in this process adds to the vocal quality.

You are definitely a man who is using the technology in such a wonderful way.
Learning vocals on the Internet and you have a sound cloud site you are posting both audio and video material. I love it. This is why right now is a good time to be alive and using such a great resource to advance yourself in something extremely positive.
I like the point that you are challenging yourself by bringing the song up another half step.
I guess my 1st question to you would be how does it feel when you're singing in this new key? To be a little more specific what's the difference in shifting to the high notes in this key versus the previous key you sang it in?
Also, if you go back to the 1/2 step lower key now and sing it again doe's it feel any easier then before in that key? Or about the same?
Do you like this new key (for you) better because the air pressures matchup in a different way between your registers then the previous key?
Or do you find it more difficult?
What I'm looking for is your observations by doing this.
I know I'm asking questions instead of giving advice here. The reason why is because these would be the type of questions I'd be asking you in my studio after listening.
There is no right answer just observations and of course these observations can teach you and all of us something..
I don't want to put words into your mouth I'd like to hear your response to these questions. When you get the time.
I will continue sharing my observations with you from there.
Take your time don't feel you have to immediately answer this give it a shot in your own timeframe and then get back to me…..

I don't understand why more members are so shy about posting videos?
Let me start by saying this is a really cool song for your voice and your style...
Really good vocal resonance in your voice and spot on tune. I actually feel you did a pretty good job even on the high notes that you're asking for help on... but of course we can always improve this and in that spirit here's my response.
So on the chorus when you're singing the lyrics "old man" the high note is (Ab) which is right at the top note in basically what I like to call normal mix for you... any note above that is either in head voice or in what I call extended mix...
And the (Ab) is the place where we usually shift From chest to mix. For male baritone and tenors...
I'm saying this because that's one of the reasons why this is such a tough note for you to sing you have to pull your mix all the way up to (Ab) and keep it sounding consistent in tone from the bottom notes that you're coming from.
Or of course the other option is you can sing that note in your head voice..
If you do that you need enough resonance in the head voice note's so the sound of the tone will match up more to the other notes in your Mix.....
These high note problems specially when you have to pull mix up a little higher are always answered in your ability to find a way to keep the cords connected/sealed and not push too much air through them while you're singing in this area of your range.
I have some thoughts and exercises for you but like always it's a little more difficult to do it in words here on the forum.. So like other times in the past I'm going to put part of the response to your song here on the forum.
And then introduce and talk about it a little bit more at this weeks weekly wrap up that way you'll have some video demonstrations of the exercises.
So be on the lookout for that.

Well of course like I've always pointed out I've really gone out of my way to be thorough about the succession and growth of taking a student from beginning to advanced levels.
Working this all out in courses has been both a joy and challenge for me.
I went out of my way to be extremely thorough knowing I wouldn't necessarily be able to hear a student from one week to the next progressing through the lessons.
I think if you take a look at the beginning nonfree course you'll see there's a lot of very good information before you make it to the intermediate course.
I do think based upon a persons previous and past knowledge it's possible to start at the intermediate course and take it from there.
I think a great option for you however would be to just buy one month's access to everything on the site so you could at least check out the lessons in the beginning course and the intermediate course before you purchase the whole beginning course.
Maybe one month's access could answer the question more correctly for you than I could just buy making assumptions when I actually haven't heard you vocalize.
With that said I don't think you'll be totally lost by starting at the intermediate course and there's plenty there to advance to into the advanced course… But there could be some good points you miss by not working your way through the beginning course up to it.
I do feel each of the courses stand on their own and then progress into new information.
There is definitely a little more overlapping of information between the beginners to the intermediate course than anything that's happening in the advanced course.
The advanced course makes assumptions that you have a lot of very important aspects of range development already in place. And then uses those concepts and introduces many different scales and chords to vocalize to.
I guess what I'm saying here is that it would be a much harder jump to go from the intermediate course to the advanced course that it possibly could be to go from the beginning to intermediate course…
Again if you had the opportunity to just look at the courses you would see that there is a lot of information that's happening in the beginning course that is of great value.
I know I'm being a little redundant here but my best suggestion is just get access to the site for at least a month and look over all of the courses and then make your decision from there.

I have a NutrBullet food processor/juicer that I use every morning. My usual approach is to throw in some berries some pineapple chunks with 50% greens and water. Quite often when I'm on the go this is my 1st meal of the day. In all honesty unless I'm going out with friends I've never been much of a morning breakfast person. A SIMPLE PINEAPPLE
The pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family. It is extremely rare that bromeliads produce edible fruit. The pineapple is the only available edible bromeliad today.
One pineapple is actually made up of dozens of individual flowered's that grow together to form the entire fruit. Each scale on a pineapple is evidence of a separate flower.
Pineapple stop ripening the minute they are picked. No special way of storing them will help ripen them further. Color is relatively unimportant in determining the rightness. Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems related to allergies. In and of itself, pineapple has a very low risk for allergies.
Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. This makes it a valuable dietary addition for frequent flyers and others who may be at risk for blood clots. An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice. It really works! Fresh juice and some nuts 1st thing in the morning often make a difference. It's all so good for a healthier mouth. I have no doubt there are some information those 2 lessons they can add to of your overall performance.. not sure if you feel like it or not but I would love to see you post another video of the same song after thinking about some of the suggestions in lesson 64 and 65. Obviously, not absolutely necessary just seems like it would be fun to see some subtle differences in how you went about choosing those differences.
Either way rather you post or not I'm sure you'll have fun thinking about those stylistic elements applied to this song or any other song for that matter.

Great to see you use the site in this way keep then coming.
So cool thing about this song is that it is all about inflections in tone coloring. Really not too much of a challenge range wise I suspect? You're mostly in chest and just a little bit of mix. I liked the long sustaining tone close to the end of the song very cool..
I hope you're checking out the last 2 lessons in the advance voice course which are step 64 and step 65... Both lessons talk about techniques for varying the melody line. Such things as coloring the tone in various different ways by the use of stylistic tools such as vibrato, tone color, dynamic contrast, inflection, and ornamentation. These are the type of things you can do without changing the melody line note wise.
A song like this that doesn't have much of a challenge in range is all about the usage of such stylistic tools. Might be fun if you're willing to do it to again but maybe purposely bringing in some of the techniques from the lesson 64 and 65.
Now don't get me wrong I always go out of my way to point out too much of that kind of stuff is too much so I am not asking you to go crazy and completely change what you've done with your song here.
Still maybe just a little change in the melody line here and a little difference in volume for contrast their in a very subtle way would be how you could possibly raise the bar to this performance from your current performance. These are the kinds of things I always ask of singers when I'm working with them in the recording studio.. It's more of a way of just getting creative juices flowing and applying more ideas and then keeping what sticks.
But overall buddy I think this was a good performance you're right you really had to decrease the heart rate to feel the groove at that slow temple but you did it and I did like the additional slide guitar work as well.

Yes there should be a practice schedule which is a PDF file and also many audio MP3 files that you can download right onto your desktop. If they're not showing up when you have access to the site then look up to the right the bar just below the totally vocals.com logo and
look over to the right and boot on "support"..
From their a bar comes down you should see "helpdesk" and "billing". You should boot on "helpdesk" then a screen will come up that says submit a ticket... fill out a little questionnaire it is very short and easy to do.
State the technical problem and help should be on the way.

Well I do have a lot to comment on here.
I'm going to make some mic recommendations but before I do I want to point out the fact that no matter what mic you have if the voice is too weak it means that the singer is not creating enough compression with the vocal cords to get that resonant sound that helps carry and cut through the band.
So again what I am saying it that it is not about just singing louder it's about getting the proper chord compression which means the compression comes from pushing in from the sides to create more compressed vocal folds.. the types of exercises that help accomplish this are called pharyngeal's.
When that happens correctly the air focuses through them and creates a more resonant sound.
Also, you're right on the money when it comes to talking about how you have to focus into the mic and sing on the SM 57's and 58s Both Shure and Beta models.
Now as you already know 57 and 58's are the standard workhorse mic's for almost the last 40 some years.
So not to be redundant but if you do sing within a inch to a inch and a half of the Mic and have a good monitor system you should be able to get plenty out of it.
Especially if you're vocal technique is creating a more resonant sound.
Now you may know or may not know about some of the other mics on the market that singers are using ..
If you have a singer who sings with a lot of light breathy approach possibly a Sennheiser E9 45s is a possible consideration.
The problem with this microphone is quite often you have to really work at EQing it correctly. It's an okay Mic but it does require a lot of work to EQ it correctly which can be a problem when out performing in live settings.
Now honestly I have not tried the next microphone I am going to suggest to you and your pocket book has to be pretty good to afford this microphone. But my buddies in the know all highly recommended it.
If the price may be to high which I would totally understand However I'm still going to mention it because it is possible that you could look around and see if you could find a used one at a better sale price.
Its hypercardioid but its truly in a class above most of the rest so I am told by my recording engineer/live sound buddies.
Besides this microphone there is also the Neumann 105 it is it really smooth and high end mic and very good for delicate singing. It's feedback rejection is okay.. Not as good as an SM 58 or 57 or the bata's.
Which incidentally when you're looking at every microphone you always have to consider how sensitive they are in relationship to feeding back if you turn them up to high. Some are better than others but another element of the perfect microphone everyone needs to be aware of.
Now for a mic with more presence the Shure KSM9 is supposed to be pretty good.
Again I'm told by my friends that know that the earthwork products are all pretty incredible but so are the prices.
Example at sweetwater the earthworks
List price is $1499 ouch right?
Like I said my recording and sound man buddies are total equipment junkies.
Be that as it may they do know the good stuff.
Some of the other mic's I have mentioned are less than this but still a little on the pricey side.
Makes those SM 57's and 58's sound pretty great right? Price wise anyway.
As far as some of the old microphones back in the day like when the McGuire sisters were singing everything was different and the old Mic's from then in today's world probably would not have a very good feedback rejection system.
Some of the old Mic's still stand up in the recording studio but not for live performance, the mic's of today are far superior to what was available then.

great to see you again! I always love it when you post videos. And always love to hear the improvement in your vocals as well as your creative approaches towards creating your videos. Overall I love this song but in the spirit of helping you improve I am going to get nit picky and pick on a few spots.
I think you had a little problem with the lyric *and pain is is all around * which is about 228 on the video.. Actually my only issue is with the words "and pain" just seems like the quality of that could be a little bit better to keep up the quality of the rest of the line in your vocal. Fixing something like that is easy
Go back a little bit to where you're comfortable to get into the song and this lyric.
Before you sing it again 1st do one of my little famous little siren sounds.. I'm always asking everybody to do this...Use a hum or an Oo vowel sound... l use siren sounds to balance the air pressure and to equalize the pressure underneath the chords. Then go back and sing that line again and see if it seems a little easier without sacrificing any of the energy.
I know you can't do that when you're actually singing the song but if you worked that part out and feel comfortable with it then when you go back to sing the song your muscle memory should take over.
By the time you get to the lyric *all around* your already back on track.
I love how you built that line by singing with some energy in your dynamics and then droped down in your dynamics to "like a bridge over troubled water" and then sing with a little more energy on "I will lay me down" very effectively done .
Love the long sustaining note on the word "down" around 251 or so
Also the little vocal lick you added definitely improved the interest of your performance..
I also noticed a few different camera angles and even some panning as you sang. Does that mean you had a cameraman and used more than one camera for the shoot? I'm assuming so? As usual just commenting on your creativity in video production Very nice..
When you come back and sing *sale on silver girl* down in your chest voice that was just fine. Your low notes come out great and are very effective.
The lyric *your time has come* 319 is a bit out tune pitch wise.. I do like the way you drop to low note on that line it is stylistic and I like and i think it works quite well for your style.
Also on the end when you're singing *I will ease your mind* the long sustaining tone is very good on the the first note which is the note (E) sustaining on it in your mix .....Also your voice is holding on just great on the 1st half of that sustained word which is the word *mind* you are sustaining on the mah part of the word quite well.
But when you drop the second half of the word which is the note (C) you drop a little into your mouth resonator the reason for this is because of the pronunciation which is fine and not that noticeable.
But I bet you would improve if when you come to the 2nd half of the word you still try to keep everything similar in sound and stay up in your nasal resonator.
A bit difficult to just explain that in words, if I sang it for you I'm sure you would hear it immediately. But in words again I'm simply saying matchup the 2nd syllable to the 1st syllable of the pronunciation of the word *mind* and keep the sound more forward into your nasal resonator....

Tell you what I'll do I'll actually demonstrate the siren exercise a bit in next week's weekly wrap-up... As well as demonstrate what I mean about being more in your nasal resonator for the two note's sung on the word *mind*.....
As always Buddy I can hear your improvement and the things that you're going for. You created dynamics in this song singing at times with power and energy and at other times dropping down in volume and singing softly you also created a variety of different lengths of sustaining tones as you build the song, All of these things help move the song along with creates more interest.
